Breaking free from old emotional patterns isn’t about forcing change overnight — it’s about gently turning toward yourself with awareness and compassion. The patterns that keep us stuck were once survival strategies, but today, they can be updated and transformed. In my work with clients, I guide them through simple yet powerful steps that help shift these patterns at their roots — through awareness, small choices, and connecting back to the body. If you’re ready to start untying the knots that hold you back, here’s your path forward.
1. Spot the Pattern
Awareness is the first shift. Start noticing:
What situations trigger the pattern?
What feelings come up just before you react?
What’s the story you tell yourself in those moments?
2. Name the Emotion Beneath
Most patterns are driven by powerful emotions — fear of rejection, shame, helplessness. Naming these feelings gives them less power. For example, “Ah, this is the familiar fear of being left out.”
3. Trace It Back
Gently explore where this pattern might have begun. Often, there's an origin story from childhood or early adulthood. Understanding this helps shift from self-judgment to self-compassion.
4. Create Micro-Shifts
Big patterns break through small, repeated changes. For example:
Pausing and breathing before reacting
Choosing a different word in a familiar argument
Saying “No” where you always said “Yes”
5. Engage the Body
Emotional patterns are stored not just in the mind but in the body. Somatic practices, breath-work, and movement therapies help release stuck emotional energy.
6. Seek Support
Therapy provides a safe space to untangle and rewire these patterns. An attuned therapist can help you see blind spots and practice new ways of being.
A Gentle Reminder!
If you find yourself stuck in a pattern, please remember — it doesn’t mean you’re broken or failing. It means you have a part of you that learnt to survive in a certain way and is now calling for healing and update.
Change is possible, and it starts with the brave step of noticing and choosing differently, even in small ways. Patterns feel powerful, but your awareness and emotional presence are even more powerful.
